How is a work of art restored? Our conservation and curatorial teams recently restored Édouard Manet’s “Woman in Striped Dress” (ca. 1877–80) in a large-scale project involving art historical research, scientific analysis, and careful cleaning. Through their analysis, conservators discovered that two layers of varnish—one quite thick—had been applied to the Manet painting over the years, muddying the artist’s exquisitely subtle palette and compromising the pictorial space with a greenish-brown resinous coating. Lena Stringari, Deputy Director and Chief Conservator, explains, “Manet’s signature is his masterful and deft brushwork, which was being obscured and flattened by the varnish.” Learn more about the process at guggenheim.org/blogs. #Manet
