My 4 song EP #Bombastic turned 3 yesterday!! This was my first independent release, and I learned a LOT.
I learned to take a chance on young, unknown writers, (#Bombastic was co written with then unknown @チャーリー・プース). I learned that you don’t need a major label to chart, (which 3 years ago wasn’t as common). I learned the power of #Fandom & watched my #Bonbons grow &spread the word organically,(ILY so much thank you! ?) I learned how to make incredible music videos on a shoestring budget &still rack up tens of millions of views! (Thank you @darrenfuckingcraig for giving me a crash course in production and directing! I also went ahead and learned how to edit them myself too.) I learned the VALUE of owning my masters. Three years and close to 20 syncs in tv and movies later, It’s STILL getting licensed, including a #SuperBowl commercial and an upcoming movie trailer for @lionsgate. I always figured being indie would just forever be more like a passion project-but I’m standing here telling you that I made more money as an indie artist than I ever did signed to a major label! I don’t usually like talking about money, but I think it’s important for my artist friends out there to know that you CAN survive as an artist independently and THRIVE! I see a lot of artists get dropped from majors and think their careers are over- BUT THEYRE JUST BEGINNING!! MASTERS MATTER and being the sole owner of mine allows me to approve film and tv syncs quickly with no fuss or red tape, which tv/film/advertisers prefer to the often slow and complicated processes found at major labels. HUGE thanks to @hitchermusic and @rxsongs for having kick ass sync departments and making my lil indie EP the gift that keeps on giving!
I still struggle with feelings of inadequacy. I still get that twinge in my chest where I feel like I’m not good enough & nobody wants me bc I’m not signed; like I’m not sitting at the cool kids table. BUT I have to remind myself of all I’ve accomplished on my own & remember why I do this- because I was BORN AN ARTIST and I NEED and DESERVE to express myself. ? If you want something done, you just gotta do it yourself ??‍♀️
