How do we collect new works of art? At the Guggenheim, curators and museums supporters work together in the acquisition process. Swipe left to discover pieces by LaToya Ruby Frazier, John Houck, Lucy Raven, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya, recently added to the collection. __ The Guggenheim actively collects works of art. The museum’s founders established a mission of engaging with and acquiring contemporary art, and their commitment to innovative new art remains a core principle of the institution. A significant facet of our collection is represented by our growing holdings of works in photography and film and video, which are sustained by the Photography Council—just one of the museum’s various Affinity Groups that facilitate acquisitions through their philanthropic support. Our curators conduct ongoing, in-depth research on artists whose works align with the collecting strategies of the museum and the Council. These ideas are then shared with the rest of the curatorial department and with our director, Richard Armstrong, and with feedback from this group, compose a ballot of works that they collectively recommend to the Council through formal presentations at semiannual meetings. Learn more about the process at guggenheim.org/blogs. #GuggenheimCollection __ Artworks from left to right: #PaulMpagiSepuya “Dark Mirror” (2017); #LucyRaven, “Subterrestrial Cinema” (2017-18); #LaToyaRubyFrazier “Mom and Me on Her Couch” (2010); #JohnHouck, “Laternal Primary” (2017)
