Alberto Giacometti’s father, Giovanni, was a well-known post-impressionist painter. Giacometti’s early focus on Giovanni as a subject—as seen in “Head of a Father” (swipe right to view)—reveals the intimacy and importance of their relationship. This is one of three early heads of Giovanni on display at the Guggenheim and is the most visually descriptive of the three. Giacometti has carefully modeled his father's features, creating a sculptural portrait of Giovanni in plaster. The round, three-dimensional head with a delicately carved beard and lips hinting at good humor evokes an emotional, as well as physical, concept of his father. The yellowish tone of the material here is likely due to a discoloration of the shellac, a coating applied to the plaster for the bronze casting process.
