Security system, Kamakura period: years 1185 to 1333.

These two wooden guardian figures kept watch over the Buddha and his followers outside Ebaradera temple in Sakai, Japan.

At 7 feet tall, they were believed to ward off wicked spirits and protect the temple grounds from thieves. Those fierce faces and bulging muscles show their power to drive away evil.

They were originally painted red, but their color has worn off after centuries of exposure to the elements, because not even fierce guardians can defy the weather.
See this pair at our @freersackler, and learn more about Buddha in their exhibition “Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice Across Asia” through Nov. 29.
