The Guam kingfisher is one of the most endangered bird species on the planet, and is extinct in the wild.
Last month, a female Guam kingfisher hatched at @スミソニアン国立動物園's Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). When it hatched on May 17, the chick weighed 5.89 grams—about .2 ounces.
The first photo here shows the chick in a keeper's hand two days after hatching. Swipe to see it after a week, 10 days and 12 days.
Guam kingfishers were taken from the wild into human care in the 1980s to create a breeding program to save the species from extinction. We hatched our first chick in 1985. Since then, 19 chicks have hatched at SCBI.
