This rice bowl set by Joungmee Do links traditional Korean culture, metal craft skills and aesthetics with the contemporary practice of Korean-Australian metal craft artists.
Do produced these two covered rice bowls, ubiquitous objects in Korean life, using the traditional Korean jewellery and metal craft technique of jjoeumipsa (inlay). They are created from steel with silver, gold, bronze and odong inlaid wire. The design is inspired by traditional Korean textile patterns, such as those used in Joseon dynasty bojagi (wrapping cloths). This ipsa process is extremely labour intensive, these bowls taking 6 hours of work a day for 6-8 months to complete.
