Say hello to the X-Y Position Indicator, commonly known today as the computer mouse!
This is a replica of the first mouse by Doug Engelbart who became perhaps the seminal figure of computer interface design. Inspired by Vannevar Bush’s “As We May Think”, he set up the Augmentation Research Centre at Stanford Research Institute and set about developing new ways for people to directly interact with information. His ideas are most clearly expressed in his 1962 report “Augmenting Human Intellect:A Conceptual Framework”. In 1967 Engelbart applied for and received a patent for his ‘X-Y position indicator for a display system’ but the patent expired in 1987 before the personal computer revolution. He never received any royalties for his invention.
