The ever popular plasma ball in our Experimentations exhibition - how does it work?

The plasma ball contains a central electrode and a mixture of different invisible gasses. The electrode radiates a high-voltage electric field which charges the gas molecules with static electricity. When you touch the glass, you provide a discharge path for the static electricity. The electrons collide with the ionised gas molecules and release energy as light.
