This is the first time I’ve written with an eyedroppered pen down to its last drop of ink before changing out the ink. In mid-word at that. It’s overcast today with patches of rain here and there and my thoughts are with my Dad who served in the US Army for over 25 years and who denied receiving the Purple Heart out of respect for the very men and women we honor today.

One his favorite pastimes was driving through backroads in the remote countryside with me. It was always off the cuff and we made our own adventures as we’d go. Perhaps that is why I have such a sense for chasing wonder in the ordinary and seeing the mundane as an opportunity to look for magic in the moment. So that’s our plan today too. To get in the car and see where the road takes us.

Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day I’d call my father to thank him for all that he did beyond just being the best dad but for sacrificing and serving to preserve the freedom and innocence of moments that I’ve always been able to enjoy, like hearing the laughter of my son unfettered and carefree. What a gift beyond the scope. I miss being able to call him and to hear his voice. We don’t realize how precious all those little moments are. So here’s to you D.A.D. Thank you for everything. I love you.
