Photos by @FransLanting Albatrosses, like these Laysans in Hawaii with their newborn chick, search for food at sea and they often mistake floating plastic and rubber junk for fish or squid and swallow it. And they feed it to their offspring. When you walk around an albatross colony you see the sad results. Thousands of young birds die every year because their parents feed them plastic instead of fish and it clogs up their intestines until they die. It’s heartbreaking to see, but because it happens on remote oceanic islands, few people know about it. The first photo shows an albatross family; the second one a pile of junk I collected from other nests and from the carcasses of dead chicks.
