Photo and words by @FlorianSchulzVisuals // I was amongst a large pod of sperm whales in the Gulf of California, when two individuals swam over in my direction to check me out. My heart was racing as these ocean giants approached. I could see their eyes focus on me. Even though I noticed a small yellow line coming out of the mouth of one whale, I did not pay closer attention and thought it must be a kelp-like seaweed. It simply did not fit in my head, that even this individual was suffering from fishing gear left afloat in the ocean. When I reviewed the image later, I realized it was a nylon rope.
More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic are already floating in our oceans, reaching even the far-flung corners of this planet. Some 700 species of marine animals have been reported—so far—to have eaten or become entangled in plastic, such as this Sperm Whale in Baja California. We need stricter laws to prevent this trend to continue! #oceanconservation #spermwhale #underwaterphotography #bajacalifornia
