I’ve been asked those questions and not known how to answer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rather it’s a question of if one watches this kind of work at all, or watches it only once, and with whom one watches it, and in what context, it’s a question of whether the pained and anarchic energies it contains can be absorbed into the menu of entertainments, consumed as just another open tab. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Without yet judging its success or failure as a self-contained work of art—possibly it has not succeeded, possibly it has failed—but recognizing that it is the kind of work that says what we’d rather not hear: that some are guilty and some are their victims. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is in a category of works (like “Get Out” or images by Kara Walker) that engage unmitigated race horror, asking not to be seen but rather to see. Not “Have you seen it?” but “Has it seen you?” Whether it succeeds or not, are you positioned above it, assessing and enjoying it, or within it, politically vulnerable to or complicit in the horror it evokes? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This Is America will be jokes and memes before these questions have a chance. We’ve tried to tell you in every different way and can only now conclude you’d rather not know. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
