My little guy is home! We put Hank in the bedroom and let Gus get used to being home, and then out in the backyard so he could smell less like the vet. And I'll be goddamned but it actually worked. So the next step for Gus is a follow up in two weeks to redo blood work, an ultrasound of his heart, I think a couple other tests and a Holter monitor. (He was actually scheduled for his 6 month check-up early June.) I will not be reopening donations at this time, because as of now, your generosity has it all covered. I will post receipts and an update on the site. I just want to express my gratitude again. You are all welcome to come meet the kids if you're ever in town (Sacramento, CA) and I hope you know if you ever need anything, if you are in a position where you need help with vet bills I'm happy to reach out for you. Now for some medical jargon: You may or may not know that Gus has a congenital heart defect that is similar to Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, diagnosed last March. There is an extra electrical path in his heart that when the electrical signal fires, instead of firing and stopping and then starting again, it will run in a loop, never stopping. It's been well controlled with medication for over a year, and that medication has been increased. Surgery to correct this is done in a couple of places on the east coast and Ohio. It's rarely done and usually only done on large animals. At this point, we have to hope the medications prevent this from happening again. If it happens again, we will try the same thing that was done today, IV medication to stop the electrical signal loop, and then go from there.
