“Don’t worry, he is alright” a Jewish Welfare Board volunteer reassures concerned loved ones in Yiddish on this poster.
One of many religious, secular, and civic aid societies that sprung into action during World War I, the Jewish Welfare Board described their purpose as “to be with the Jewish soldier and sailor everywhere.” The Jewish Welfare Board raised millions in relief funds, maintained social centers for servicemen stateside and in Europe, and, together with the Red Cross, Young Men's and Women's Christian Associations, and National Catholic War Council, deployed tens of thousands of women as uniformed volunteers. After the war, the Jewish Welfare Board worked in veteran’s hospitals and Jewish community centers.
