Hi this is Gillian Laub and I'll be posting some images I made while working on the story, “The Rising Anxiety of White America,” for April's National Geographic issue on race. In this story, I focused on two cities in America in the throes of cultural transformation — Hazleton, Pennsylvania and New Orleans, Louisiana. This photograph was made in Hazleton. In 2000, 95% of Hazleton was white. By 2016 the white population plummeted to 44% while the Latinos became the majority. This is the Sanctuary - an all-purpose community center that hosts free public events. The Sanctuary was once a church home to a hundred-year-old Slovak Parish. The two stars at this event (pictured in this photograph) created an act that makes sport and theatrical entertainment out of the tensions between the new and old Hazleton. Jason Dougherty (16 years in the ring) on the left fights the new local champion Marcellino (Marcy) Cabrera. Dougherty mentored Marcy when he moved from the Dominican Republic in 2008 at the age of 15.
