The massive illuminated nebuta floats parade the streets during festivals in August. They are made out of washi paper, bamboo and wire, and are painted with sumi ink, pigment and fabric dyes. There are various nebuta festivals across Aomori Prefecture, but the main one that takes place in the prefecture’s capital draws a crowd of around 2.8 million people. Throughout the year, nebutashi (craftspeople who make nebuta), design and construct the floats with a team of specialized paper gluers, electrical engineers and apprentices. (Katherine Whatley photo)
