Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata has passed away at age 82. He is most famous for his animated film "Grave of the Fireflies." The film, which depicts the horrors of war through the eyes of two children, reflected Takahata's pacifist stance that was formed after living through WWII. At age 79, Takahata received his first Academy Award nomination for "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya." In an interview with The Japan Times in 2015, Takahata said he was a staunch supporter of hand-drawn animation. "(Before computer graphics), animation was only flat and two-dimensional. It could never be truly real," Takahata said. "But that was the point: By keeping everything flat, animation allows viewers to imagine what is behind the images." (Martin Holtkamp photos)
