Theoretical physicist Professor Stephen Hawking has died, aged 76.

Within the astronomical community Hawking was famous for his work with Roger Penrose on singularity theorem - which included the idea that the Universe may have began as a singularity (where matter is compressed to a point) - as well as the prediction that black holes should emit radiation, commonly referred to as 'Hawking Radiation', leading to their eventual evaporation.

Hawking became a pop-culture phenomenon. He embraced the role of science communicator and brought his love of cosmology to a general audience through regular TV show appears and as a best-selling author.

The world has lost a truly brilliant mind.
