They come every Sunday to throw a 6-pound rubber ball in a game of pelota mixteca. They keep playing every Sunday to preserve a dying language. Jorge Cruz is one of the players of this indigenous game that, according to participants, originated more than 500 years ago in Oaxaca, Mexico. When he first began to play more than 20 years ago, he was hesitant. As a teenager in Los Angeles, he was more interested in playing popular sports like basketball and soccer. Pelota mixteca, though, was extremely important to his father, a first-generation immigrant from Oaxaca. After repeated pleas by his father, he finally agreed to try the sport. “My dad first brought me out here when I was 17, but now I come on my own and I bring my children,” Jorge said. “He would always tell me that this was one of the ways that we could preserve our culture.” So he's passed the Sunday tradition down to his own son, too, who says, “I feel empowered and excited that I’m playing the same game that my ancestors did.” @glaskewii took this photo of Miguel Cruz Jr. playing the game.
