Lionel Richie may be the only pop star who has counted both Nelson Mandela and Muammar el-Qaddafi among his die-hard fans. Of course, both of them are gone now. But beginning on March 11, @ライオネル・リッチー will join @ケイティ・ペリー and the country dreamboat @lukebryan at the judges’ table on @American Idol. In Lionel, the show may have found an ideal counterweight for Katy’s screwball enthusiasm. All 3 judges have sold a lot of records, but only Lionel can speak with the authority of a man who started out in the age of Motown and has survived into the age of the meme. The “Idol” gig is another opportunity to do what he’s become adept at — trading on millennial pop culture’s ironic fascination with his pleading 1983 hit “Hello” without letting himself become the joke. “Hip means now,” Lionel said. “I’ve never been hip. I’ve always been popular.” @ryanpfluger took this photo of #LionelRichie. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
