#2018Triennial artist #WilmerWilsonIV gathers flyers and other ephemera from the streets, then affixes them to wood with hundreds of thousands of staples. Only small pieces of the original prints remain visible.
As Heather Holmes notes in the exhibition catalogue, "the figures that feature in Wilson’s sculptures are partially or completely obscured by the staples. These characters are punctured and detained by the artist’s hand, but simultaneously granted the relief of obscurity and cover. To understand Wilson’s stapling as an act of care is also to understand blackness as an ongoing site of surveillance, rendering visibility double-edged."
