In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—whose work helped pave the way for other women. Director Dorothy Arzner was a pioneer for women in film—the only female director working extensively throughout the 1930s. During that time, she directed some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, from Katharine Hepburn in Christopher Strong to Joan Crawford in The Bride Wore Red. She also had the distinction of becoming the first woman to direct a “talkie,” and was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America. Here’s hoping we see even more women behind the lens in the future.
