In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—whose work helped pave the way for other women. In 1916, Jeannette Rankin became the first woman to hold federal office in the United States, elected to the House of Representatives in Montana and then again in 1940. In Congress, Rankin worked to pass a constitutional women’s suffrage amendment—and succeeded: the 19th amendment passed on August 18, 1920.
