Alice Ball was the first chemist to find an effective treatment for leprosy in 1916, and her discovery was used in America until the 1940s to help hundreds of people who would otherwise be exiled because of the disease. At a time when women were not allowed in graduate programs in most elite colleges, Ball also became the first woman to get a Master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.
