La silhouette de ce mystérieux jeune homme au gant, dont l’identité n’a jamais été réellement établie, émerge de l'ombre. L'élégance de ses vêtements, en particulier le raffinement des gants de cuir, laisse supposer qu'il s'agit d'un aristocrate, âgé de 18 ou 20 ans, soucieux d'être habillé à la mode vénitienne de son temps. Par un choix de couleurs volontairement restreintes, Titien met en valeur le caractère du personnage. Cette importance nouvelle accordée à l'individu reflète le goût humaniste qui entoure le peintre à l'époque. Considéré comme l'un des plus grands portraitistes de la Renaissance italienne, Titien a élaboré le type du portrait psychologique dont la force réside dans l'intensité d'expression du modèle. Peint probablement vers 1520, ce portrait de jeunesse annonce les nombreuses effigies de monarques et d'aristocrates qui ont valu au maître vénitien le surnom de "peintre des princes".

?We wish you a #GoodWeek with this portrait of a man by Titian, ca 1520. This mysterious young man with a glove, whose identity has not yet been proven beyond doubt, emerges from a shadowy ground. The elegance of his appearance, particularly the refined touches of the leather gloves, suggests that he was an aristocrat aged about 18 or 20, who was an avid follower of fashion in the Venice of his day. Titian has deliberately used a limited range of colors to bring out the sitter's character. This new foregrounding of the individual reflects the humanist philosophy which influenced the painter at that time. Titian, considered one of the greatest portrait painters of the Italian Renaissance, played a major part in developing the psychological portrait, whose strength lies in the intensity of the sitter's expression. The work was probably painted shortly before 1520, when the artist was still a young man in Venice. It heralds the numerous portraits of monarchs and aristocrats that earned Titian the name of "painter of princes."
