They’re pink, blue, yellow and green, and drawn in a single swoop. For about 3 years, a street artist has anonymously drawn as many as 100 #hearts a day on Manhattan sidewalks. Hash Halper (@newyorkromantic) drew his first hearts in 2014. “I fell in love with a woman,” the 38-year-old explained. @newyorkromantic wrote her initials, “MSB,” along with hearts, along his route to work. “I wanted to infuse that romance into the city.” They stopped seeing each other, but he continued the project. Why? NYC is losing its romance, he said, as people spend more time looking at their phones. He also hopes that the hearts might influence New Yorkers’ behavior and decisions. Before he switched to sidewalk chalk from spray chalk, though, his art mainly influenced the decisions of police officers. His punishment: community service. “Drawing hearts is community service,” @newyorkromantic said, “so it’s ironic to get community service for something that you feel is a community service.” @kholoodeid photographed Hash Halper drawing ???? around NYC.
