No, you’re not looking at a mop. This is a #puli, a Hungarian herding dog whose coat grows into tight cords that hang like fringe on a throw pillow. @karstenmoran took this photo of the pup, Rummy, in a hotel room in Manhattan on Sunday before the 142nd #WestminsterDogShow, which began yesterday. It was a bad hair day for Rummy when he and his owner, Barbara Pessina, arrived in the city amid unrelenting rain and temperatures that made Manhattan feel like a bog. “What was I thinking?” Barbara as she unloaded Rummy’s crate from the back of her car. “Way too wet for a corded dog.” When dry, Rummy weighs 32 pounds. Give him a long walk in heavy rain, and he returns home topping the scale at 100 pounds. Preparing for the @westminsterkennelclub #DogShow can be a 12-hour process that includes 8 to 10 hours under a dryer. “He could care less,” Barbara said about the drying process. “He just goes to sleep.” At the show, which began yesterday, 2 other dogs competed against Rummy in breed judging. It’s only his 4th time in the show ring. “He’s a wild man,” said Barbara, who held his leash tightly. “He just wanted to take off,” she said. Nevertheless, Rummy won best in breed.
