Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and phenomena, including the moon, stars, planets, comets and eclipses. Until the invention of telescopes in the 17th century, there were three main instruments for making sense of the stars: astrolabes, quadrants and celestial globes. This large and lavishly decorated astrolabe was made in 1712 for the last ruler of the Iranian Safavid dynasty, Shah Sultan Husayn. It’s 53cm tall and very heavy, so it was probably more ornamental than practical – astrolabes designed to be used were much more handily sized.
