These carved wall panels show Assyrian King Sennacherib’s successful attack on the ancient city of Lachish in 701 BC. They were made for the king’s South-West Palace in Nineveh, in modern-day Iraq – swipe to see the campaign unfold! ⚔️?? In the first panel, long-range artillery are slinging stones and shooting arrows, while near the front storm troopers prepare for the assault. In the second panel, siege engines are led up artificial ramps while water is poured over them to prevent them being set alight by torches thrown from inside the city. In the third panel, King Sennacherib sits on a magnificent throne, watching the capture of Lachish while his chariot and bodyguards are stationed nearby. The king’s face has been deliberately defaced in this panel, perhaps by an enemy soldier at the fall of Nineveh in 612 BC.
