This dramatic pair of Assyrian reliefs is thought to show the god Ninurta, with thunderbolts in his hands, pursuing the fearsome monster Anzu. They once lined the entrance to a temple in Nimrud, in the north of modern-day Iraq. Ninurta was the chief god of the ancient city. In Assyrian mythology, Anzu stole the ‘Tablet of Destinies’ – a document believed to contain details of fate and the future – which is eventually retrieved when the monster is killed by Ninurta.
You can see these panels and other impressive objects from ancient Assyria in Rooms 6–10.
