Video by @Joel Sartore | As its name suggests, the giant garter snake is the largest of its kind, reaching 36-65 inches (91-165 cm) in length. Though venomous, they are relatively harmless to us. A bite will subdue its prey, often rodents, but will leave just a red, itchy rash on a human.
These snakes are largely aquatic and can be found in the wetlands of California’s Central Valley. Destruction of their homes for agriculture as well as industrial and urban development has eliminated the majority of this snake’s livable habitat. For this reason, giant garter snakes are now listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This snake was photographed at the @sacramentozoo.
