Video by @Joel Sartore | This baby yellow-faced turtle hatched at @OKCzoo in September and was just two months old during this photoshoot. Currently this turtle and it’s sibling can be seen in the Oklahoma City Zoo’s herpetarium nursery. This species was first recognized in the early 1970’s as being unique, but it was not formally described until 1997. They’re found in Northern Australia and are distinguishable by the yellow coloration of their faces.
Turtles and tortoises are the most endangered group of vertebrates in the world, with wild populations across the globe declining sharply mainly as a result of harvesting by humans for pet and food markets. In addition to caring for and breeding endangered turtles and tortoises, the @OKCzoo partners with the @TurtleSurvival Alliance (TSA) to conserve turtles. TSA works in turtle hotspots in 15 countries leading conservation efforts that include, enforcing laws that protect turtles, rehabilitating and releasing turtles confiscated from traffickers, and breeding and releasing endangered turtle species.
