More than 15,000 laborers work here daily to refurbish and dismantle massive ships. Ship-building industry is one of the largest employers in Bangladesh, however most laborers here work for low wages and with poor safety standards, balancing on rickety ladders and not wearing adequate protective gear. On the opposite side of the river is the old Port of Dhaka where the European and Eastern merchants built lush mansions and palaces that date back to the 17th century.
