On July 19, 1915, approximately 100,000 blue birds like this one were pinned up across the state of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association organized “Suffrage Blue Bird Day" to show support for the November 2nd referendum to give Massachusetts women the right to vote. Despite the flock of Suffrage Blue Birds, the referendum failed. Massachusetts women did not gain the vote in until the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920.
