Photo by @amivitale. Pokot waves his trunk up in the air to smell better at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), the first community owned and operated elephant sanctuary in all of Africa. In a few years he’ll be weaned and released to live among the wild herds of northern Kenya. What’s happening at Reteti is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way people relate to wild animals they once feared. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants. Elephants are highly sensitive and caring animals. If a baby elephant complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it. They have incredible memories, express grief, compassion, self-awareness and can live to be over 70 years old.
