Abandoned warship in the Kola Bay, Murmansk, Russia by @simoncroberts. Unforgiving and dramatic winters have often been regarded as one of Russia’s most defining characteristics: extreme temperatures, physical privation, an atmosphere of isolation and desolation, but also great beauty. Winter in Northern Russia, where this photograph was taken finds a region shrouded in darkness nearly 24 hours a day, a phenomenon known as Polyarnye Nochi (Polar Nights). Throughout December until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon and there is only a faint glow of light visible around midday. The American warship, Daniel Morgan, was torpedoed by the German navy during WWII and sunk on 7th May 1942. It now sits rusting in the Barents Sea on the edge of Murmansk.
