Photo by @jtkerby || Past midnight on Siberia’s Yamal Peninsula. Last July, I joined a multi-institutional research team on an expedition to explore tundra response to climate warming and reindeer grazing in the Arctic. This was our temporary home along the banks of the Mordy-Yakha River, a waterway that winds a lazy course through a region full of lakes and mires. It’s melt fed flow was a welcome sanctuary when a heatwave struck, driving air temperatures to 35C (95F) as billions of mosquitoes excitedly looked for their next meal.
