When the ice bridge that once formed every winter between Canada and Greenland last formed in the 1980s, a team of Canadian Inuit hunters crossed Baffin Bay by dogsled and they arrived in the nick of time. An epidemic of canine distemper had killed large numbers of Greenlandic huskies and the survival of the breed was questionable. The newly arrived Canadian dogs were gifted to Greenland and the dogs we see today are descendants from that generosity.
