“Io Saturnalia!” was a shout you would hear all over the ancient Roman world around the same time as the #WinterSolstice. The Saturnalia was a Roman festival that honored the god of agriculture, Saturn. During the festival, Rome became an all-out party where everyone had a holiday from work, courts were closed, slaves and masters switched clothing and swapped roles, and everyone’s moral compass was allowed to go haywire. While there were no direct festivities in honor of the sun or of the solstice itself, Romans, like many other civilizations, acknowledged this particular week as sacred. The ruins of the Temple of Saturn in Rome that you see here date from the 3rd century CE though the original temple was 800 years older.⠀
