Freedom is an important word when talking about the person who is being honoured here tonight.Freedom to create,Freedom to innovate and find new ways of expression,freedom to develop the family business into one of the most
recognisable brands on the planet,freedom to support some incredibly innovative young designers like Christopher Kane and Michael Halpern.Yes the amazing Donatella Versace has an innate sense of freedom and also optimism.
She had to endure terrible sadness after the tragic death of her brother Gianni,yet she found the strength from somewhere.As she said”we’re going to do it”,and do it she did staging her first show3 days later.The rest as they say is history.
Her incredible ability to promote and drive the business is rightly the stuff of legend.
Tonight we are recognising the house of Versace and honouring Donatella with the richly deserved Fashion Icon Award.Incredibly it’s nearly 40 years since Versace was founded and twenty since Donatella took it over and took it such incredible heights.
