The Shikoku Pilgrimage, or ‘Shikoku Henro,’ is a course connecting 88 sacred sites on the island of Shikoku, following in the footsteps of renowned monk Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai. This segment is found at Cape Ashizuri in Tosashimizu City, Kochi.

The objective of the pilgrimage may be one of many things: perhaps a prayer for good luck or good health, or a journey of self-discovery. Pilgrims wear straw hats (‘sugegasa’) bearing the saying, ‘dogyo ni-nin’—literally ‘two fellow pilgrims,’ but implying ‘Kobo Daishi is always with me.’
