1. Every October, traditional ‘hayafune’ boats from the nine districts of Shingu City battle the currents of the Shingu River to be the first to circle three times around Mifune Island.

2. The deity of Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine is moved into a portable shrine called a ‘mikoshi,’ which is then placed in a red ‘shinkosen’ boat to circle the island.
