MC Lyte is the first rap artist to perform at Carnegie Hall, the first woman rapper to receive a gold single, and the first woman solo rapper nominated for a Grammy.
A pioneer in the industry, she opened the door for many women in hip-hop.
Women have always played a role in the multifaceted musical genre—proving their prowess when battling male counterparts, challenging stereotypes or commenting on contemporary issues. While hip-hop has seemed at times to celebrate hyper-masculinity, sexual promiscuity and misogyny, women in the industry have spoken up and established a vital role for themselves in the music and culture.
We’re preserving the legacy of hip-hop with the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap, produced by our @nmaahc and @smithsonianfolkways with an executive committee that includes MC Lyte.
But we need your help to tell #HipHopHistory. Back the Kickstarter project at the link in our profile or si.edu/kickstarter. ?: MC Lyte, outside in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, by Al Pereira in @nmaahc’s collection.
