This is Queen Sembiyan, a ruler who lived in 10th-century India, depicted as the goddess Uma, also known as Parvati.

You’ll find this sculpture in “Body Image,” an exhibition that explores how the human body—particularly the idea of the “beautiful” body—is central to artistic expression on the Indian subcontinent. Through the body, artists express fundamental beliefs about the nature of being, social ideals, gender roles, and hierarchies of power, both earthly and divine.

This sculpture of Sembiyan was made when she was 80 years old. She’s still depicted as a youthful beauty, with a narrow waist and shapely hips and chest, exemplifying the ideal beauty of that time and the cultural belief that outer beauty represented inner perfection.
