Something surreal and supernatural for Halloween, The Holy Mountain by Jodorowsky. There are few living in the world that know the tarot as profoundly and deeply as #AlejandroJodorowsky. And they are few films that prove as equally hypnotising as it is unsettling as his famed ‘#midnightmovie’- #TheHolyMountain. Being #Jodorowsky’s follow-up to the equally strange #ElTopo- The Holy Mountain is one that really expresses the Russian-Chilean-born director’s study of the arcane and occult. Through nothing other than bewildering, hyper surreal, dream-like sequences overtly laden with symbology, numerology, juxtaposed esoteric imagery and bizarre depictions of spirituality- the film can be difficult to watch in its entirety. Tableaus so grotesquely beautiful and sadistically symmetrical they render you white-knuckled and fixated in bewilderment. Religious depictions contrasted with some of the most deplorable scenes in cinema. The lack of dialogue only heightens the macabre vibe. Based on the books ‘#AscentofMountCarmel’ by #JohnoftheCross and ‘#MountAnalogue’ by #ReneDumaul, an almost nonsensical and allegorical book that was never completed, the narrative is certainly nonsensical but the message is a sensible one- you can swipe through to see a picture. It follows a Christ-like figure- one that mirrors the first card in the #Tarot 0-#TheFool- traverse to discover enlightenment, which supposedly waits at the top of the Holy Mountain. It was through our research into the Tarot that we rediscovered this classic, counter cultural film, which is the perfect addition to any Halloween evening. This truly bizarre film did a lot for alternative cinema- a real definitive expression of the burgeoning hippie movement in the early seventies. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS BELOW
