Here are scenes from a captivating painted scroll that is over five metres long in total. It’s an example of the blue and green landscape style that Japanese artist Tani Bunchō is known for. In this style, distant hills are painted in darker greens and blues, while rocks and lower slopes are completed in lighter green tones. Contours on the hills are suggested with thin, clear lines, with even finer detail being added in gold paint. The scenes are based on an earlier scroll by 16th-century Chinese artist Qiu Ying.
