This cast-brass commemorative head of an Oba (king) of Benin was probably made between 1550 and 1650. The Kingdom of Benin, in modern-day Nigeria, reached the height of its power in the late 1500s. The Oba was regarded as the highest spiritual and political authority in the kingdom and is shown wearing coral bead regalia – a deep collar, an openwork cap, and strings of beads at the side of his head. British Museum Trustee and playwright Patricia Cumper talks about this finely crafted object in her blog post about what Black History Month means to her – link in bio. #BlackHistoryMonth #Nigeria #Africa #brass #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt
