Order coffee in 32 languages! B. Fischer & Co. created this booklet to help newcomers to the U.S. request the popular beverage. The booklet notes, "By comparison of these languages it will be interesting to note that the word COFFEE is pronounced very much the same in all languages." ☕ At the end of the booklet, there's a reminder to "Ask for Fischer's Coffees," of course, as well as a guide to telling one's fortune with coffee grounds. (We haven't tried this out yet but apparently if you see a star shape, you will find happiness. Congrats.) ⭐ Published around 1905, the booklet contains illustrations that today we would recognize as offensive caricatures. According to a blog post published by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, "Benedickt Fischer himself, of B. Fischer & Co., was a German immigrant who came to New York in 1855 and set up his own coffee roasting business around 1861." ☕ We hope you have a great #NationalCoffeeDay, no matter what language you use to order your warm (or iced!) cup of joe. Thanks for being friends with us here on Instagram and have a history-filled weekend, folks! ☕ Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Archives Center, National Museum of American History #CoffeeDay #Coffee #ManyVoices #ManyVoicesOneNation #AmericanHistory #Migration #Immigration #LanguageLearners #NYhistory #CupOfJoe #TheNationWeBuildTogether #FoodHistory #SmithsonianFood #BusinessHistory #AdHistory #AdvertisingHistory
