Swallows (‘tsubame’) foretell the end of summer at Ebino Plateau. The birds flock to Ebino when the feathery plumes of the Japanese silver grass (‘susuki’) begin to change color at the end of summer. As temperatures on the plateau drop, the swallows build up strength for the long flight south.
